My Top 4 Reads for Spring Break

It’s spring break and I have compiled a selection of books that you should read. Remember to comment on your views on each of the books if you read them.

4. Pick your Poison, Lauren Child

Ruby Redfort is a 13-year-old secret agent who works for, Spectrum 8, a spy agency. She lives in Twinford with her very wealthy and popular parents who are completely oblivious to the fact that she is a spy. At the beginning of the book, Ruby is running away from Vapona Begwell, the school bully. However, her school issues are nothing compared to the suspicious plot arising in the normal town of Twinford. It seems as if her problems could not escalate until she finds out that her arch-enemy, Lorelei Von Leyden and three other criminal masterminds are behind this ominous plot…

3. The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

In a place once known as North America, is a country named Panem. The Capitol is the wealthiest city, surrounded by twelve districts. All twelve go head to head in ‘The Hunger Games’ – a survival competition to show the power the Capitol has over all of the districts. Two tributes are chosen from each district to compete for their lives in an arena. When Katniss Everdeen’s little sister, Prim, is chosen to risk her life in the arena, she volunteers instead. Although the chance of making out alive is slim, she does it to protect Prim. With a heavy heart, she leaves her mother and sister. Will a miracle happen? Or will she end up getting herself killed…?

2. Murder On the Orient Express, Agatha Christie

This is the tenth Hercule Poirot mystery and is one of my favourites. This book is set on a train heading from Istanbul to London. However, the snow has built upon the tracks and brings the train to a standstill. That is when a murder is discovered. Everybody on the train is a suspect. Poirot, Monsieur Bouc and Dr Constantine hold interviews and analyse all of the clues together. With so many suspects the evidence just keeps getting more and more confusing. The ending was unexpected but started to make sense when Poirot started to piece the evidence together. I will definitely be reading more of Agatha Christie’s novels in the future.

Rebel of the Sands, Alwyn Hamilton

Rebel of the Sands is a book about 16-year-old Amani, who dreams of escaping her small village and heading to the big city. With, the help of Jin, a mysterious foreigner, Amani has a chance to make her dreams come true. She manages to escape but is faced with the challenge of crossing the deadly desert. If they do manage to cross it, whose side will they be on in this dangerous war? The book is a middle-eastern fantasy and captivates you right from the start. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. It is now one of my favourite books and I am excited to read the sequel. I would recommend this book for ages 12 and above.
